Course Description

Blended format: Online asynchronous Moodle components and a face-to-face workshop

The Digital and Continuing Education (DCE) team is offering an online instructor-led course for faculty professional development titled Designing and Teaching Accessible Courses. This blended format begins with online components in a Moodle course participants complete on their own. It later includes an optional face-to-face workshop providing participants with hands-on experiences. A certificate will be provided to those who complete all activities within the Moodle course.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the fundamental concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  2. Explain the ways in which accessibility, usability and UDL enhances the student learning experience
  3. Summarize the legal standards that apply to accessibility in online environments
  4. Evaluate course materials for accessibility barriers (e.g. checklists, guidelines, standards, accessibility checker)
  5. Develop an action plan to address accessibility barriers

Online Moodle Components
Complete modules 1-6 in the Moodle course prior to the face-to-face workshop.

Face-to-face Workshop: April 4th 10:00am-12:00pm; 1240 Pleasant Hall
Prerequisite: Completion of modules 1-6 of the Designing and Teaching Accessible Courses Moodle course is required in order to attend this workshop.

During this hands-on workshop guidelines and tools available for making course content accessible will be discussed as well as ways to use resources in Moodle to create an accessible learning experiences for all students. Time will be allocated to provide participants with hands-on experience in making a document accessible. To participate in the hands-on portion of this workshop, please plan to bring a device (e.g., laptop or tablet) and a course syllabus or a different Word document or PowerPoint you would like to make accessible.
