Course Description

Developed and facilitated by LSU Online & Continuing Education, this instructor-led course will introduce you to the core concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the laws and standards of accessibility in higher education. We will explore the common barriers that students with disabilities may face in accessing course content, and how to use resources within Moodle to overcome those accessibility issues. This course aims to equip faculty with the basic guidelines and tools for making course content accessible and universal.

This fully online asynchronous course requires approximately 8-12 hours of work. It includes seven modules consisting of resources (e.g., articles, videos), discussion activities with peers, and module assessments. The total length of time provided to complete the course is four weeks. This course will start on June 14th and end on July 9th. Those who complete all activities within the Moodle course will receive a certificate of completion. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Identify the fundamental concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Explain the ways in which accessibility, usability, and UDL enhances the student learning experience

Summarize the legal standards that apply to accessibility in online environments

Evaluate course materials for accessibility barriers (e.g. checklists, guidelines, standards, accessibility checker)

Develop an action plan to address accessibility barriers

Registration for this course will close one week prior to the start date. Information regarding access to the Moodle course and additional course information will be shared with participants via email prior to the start of the course.

Note: This course will run contingent on enrollment of five or more registrants. If a quorum of 5 hasn’t been established by 2 days prior to the start of the course, we will cancel the course and notify registrants.
